In the frame of the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction, the non-governmental organization, Volcanoes Without Boarders in coordination with the Irazu Volcano National Park and the Earth Sciences Section of UNESCO is organizing several free guided visits to the Irazu Volcano this Wednesday, October 10.

“The educational guided visits will be carried out under the concept “Volcanologist for a day” which consist in showing visitors why volcanoes exist, the history and importance of the Irazu Volcano, the evolution of the different craters, formation of lakes, eruptive activity, current state of the volcano, and what can be expected of a future eruption. We will do experiments, rocks laboratory and other activities with those that join us that day”, describes the press release.

Three guided visits are scheduled, 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. leaving from the cafeteria located at the National Park.

The activity is completely FREE of charge.

The Irazú volcano is the highest volcano in Costa Rica, standing at 3,432 meters above sea level (11,260 ft above sea level), has easy access and is close to the city (31km or 20miles from Cartago) , it has five different craters and impressive views. In clear days, both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans can be seen from its peak. With the use of a telescope the Nicaragua Lake can be spotted.
