The heavy rains that the country has experienced this year have brought back the lake of the Irazú Volcano which had dried out several years back.

The lake brings back one of the main attractions of this National Park, it is formed in the interior of the active crater and its emerald green color has in the past been featured in many postcards and photographs.

The small lake at the Diego de la Haya crater is also back.

According to park rangers in the area confirmed that the lake had started to form since around August this year.

The lake dried out in the year 2010, back then volcanologist Raúl Mora had explained to newspaper La Nación that it was possible that the disappearance of the lake obeyed to the decrease in the rains due to the El Niño phenomenon.

The Irazú was very active back in 1963 and had several ash eruptions that were bigger than those recently experienced in the country by the Turrialba volcano.

This the highest volcano in Costa Rica, standing at 3,432 meters above sea level, has easy access and is close to the city (31km or 20miles from Cartago) , it has five different craters and impressive views. In clear days, both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans can be seen from its peak. With the use of a telescope the Nicaragua Lake can be spotted.

The area known as Prusia has 16 kilometers (10 miles) of natural trails that can be explored.

The reappearance of the lake could be temporary but the rangers expect it will increase visitation to the park.
