The color of the water of the lake of the Poas Volcano in Costa Rica, changed its coloration from its regular turquoise to green.

According to information given by volcanologist Guillermo Alvarado, from the National Seismology Network, the reason for the change of color occurs because the volcano has two sources of activity under the lake which constantly inject sulfur dioxide to it; the effect of the light and the chemical composition of the lake also have an influence in causing this phenomenon that has not been seen in almost 200 years.

The lake at the Poas Volcano has changed its coloration in the past but not to this particular green color that is similar to that which has been seen at the Irazu Volcano.

“There is a subaquatic fumarole which is very active it injects sulfur dioxide and the visible blue light combines with the yellow of the sulfur and likely this is the result, this particular color”, added María Martinez from the National University’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute ( OVSICORI).
