Earlier this Sunday afternoon, First Division champs Liga Deportiva Alajuelense (LDA) won an important game against Limon Football Club by 2-0.

With this victory, LDA is one of the contenders in the quarter finals of the Summer Tournament. The team is currently in fourth place, behind first-place leader Perez Zeledon, Santos (Guapiles) and Deportivo Saprissa. LDA has 30 points, the same as Club Sport Cartagines (CSC), but it enjoys an 8-goal advantage over Cartago.

The game was played at the National Stadium in La Sabana, and it featured a record attendance for the Caribbean team. Limon FC has the dubious distinction of attracting more fans as a team in the Second Division than in the First Division, but today they enjoyed a supportive crowd -though they lost a game in which LDA was clearly superior.

Cartago lost by a wide margin against Saprissa earlier this week, and CSC is now in peril of losing their coveted spot in the quarter finals. Saprissa played one of its best games this season; Coach Guimaraes decided to let young striker Deyver Vega a chance after a long period in the bench. Vega took over the right wing and attacked CSC mercilessly, scoring two goals out of four for Saprissa. CSC scored none, and now the team from Cartago faces an uphill battle to stay in the tournament.

Earlier today, leader Perez Zeledon suffered an embarrassing 1-2 defeat at the hands of Asociacion Deportiva San Carlos. While Perez Zeledon can lose every game left in the regular season and still qualify for the quarter finals, the team may not finish in first place. San Carlos has a slight chance to advance to the next round.
