The Marlin del Rey story dates back to 2006, when a 66-foot sailing catamaran docked in northern Guanacaste changed hands. Wind conditions in the Gold Coast of Costa Rica attract many sailors and surfers, and thus the new owner of the Marlin del Rey sailed down to Tamarindo with the intent of taking visitors on unforgettable day cruises to showcase the beauty of the coastal region as it can be appreciated from the ocean.

It took some loving repair and maintenance to bring the Marlin del Rey back to a shape that was not only seaworthy but also pleasant for tourism, enjoyment and relaxation. By 2010, the Marlin del Rey was a significant tourism fixture in Tamarindo, offering daily trips complete with comfort, food and drinks. Around that time, the Guanacaste boom as we know it set off a chain of events ignited by the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia (LIR). In an effort to serve more seagoing tourists, the Marlin del Rey got some company: The custom-made 65-foot New Marlin, which calls Playas del Coco home.

After sailing on their own for a couple of years and offering the best day cruises in Costa Rica’s Gold Coast, the Marlin del Rey and New Marlin got a new sister sailing catamaran: The Marlin Tres, which calls the picturesque Playa Flamingo home. She is a Caribbean creation that was shaped and rigged in St. Croix earlier this year and was spotted crossing the Panama Canal in October.

In the near future, the New Marlin will be partnering with a top-rated boutique hotel in Playas del Coco on tour packages, to offer the best day cruise experience in the region. Now that Marlin del Rey has grown its business into a sailing fleet, they are ready to offer more private and charter options, which are perfect for weddings and receptions at sea, corporate outings, scientific tours, sightseeing, snorkeling, special celebrations, and more.
