“México: Identidad Fantástica” (Mexico: Fantastic Identity) is the name of the exhibition that brings together 71 paintings and photographs of the greatest exponents of Mexican art of the first half of the 20th century. Costa Ricans will be able to enjoy this great exhibition as of November 4th at the National Museum Dr. Rafael Angel Calderón Guardia in San José.

The itinerant exhibit,curated by Emma Cecilia García Krinsky,is part of the famous FEMSA collection which in total has over 1200 pieces of Latin America modern and contemporary art and has been recognized as the best art exhibition in Mexico. This particular exhibit has been “on tour” through several countries and is currently in Panama. Costa Rica is the next stop.

Mexico: Fantastic Identity presents masterpieces from historic moments in modern Mexican Art. Its narrative begins in 1914 with a cubist painting by Diego Rivera, under the mainstay “From the European experience to the Mexican school of painting” and then it continues through five more axes, “Landscape”, “Avant-Garde”, “The Marvelous Real, Surrealism Avant La Lettre”, “The arrival of European Surrealism” and finishing with “New trends in Mexican plastic arts” which represents a stage of rupture. The exhibit includes portraits of the authors of each masterpiece.

David Alfaro Siqueiros, Jose Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, Gerardo Murillo A.K.A. “Dr.Atl”, Rufino Tamayo, Frida Khalo, Antonio Ruiz “El Corzo”, Agustin Lazo, Juan O’Gorman, Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Alice Rahon, Pedro Friedeberg and Lilia Carrillo are some of the artists whose work we will get to appreciate in Costa Rica.

“In FEMSA we are proud of sharing the artwork of some of the greatest masters of Mexican art, who represent part of the legacy and culture of our country. Through this tour some of the most emblematic pieces of our heritage will be known. We hope the public enjoys this magnificent sample”, stated Rosa María Rodríguez, Manager of FEMSA’s Cultural Program.

This is one of many efforts being done to bring Costa Ricans closer to different forms of art and culture.
