Four days ago, residents of a small community in the municipality of Nicoya, province of Guanacaste, were concerned about the whereabouts of a 75-year old neighbor, a Canadian expat who lived a serene life in Costa Rica. Yesterday, some of his neighbors decided that it would be prudent to force their way into the small apartment the man rented. Sadly, they found out that their dear neighbor had passed away.

 

Officers from Fuerza Publica, the national police force of Costa Rica, responded to the call, which was placed around two in the afternoon on Thursday. The apartment was located on a quiet street of the district known as La Subasta Ganadera (the cattle auction). According to Carlos Hidalgo, Chief of Public Affairs of the Ministry of Public Security (Spanish initials: MSP), the elderly man appeared to have passed away of natural causes.

 

Forensic agents from the Office of Judicial Investigations (Spanish initials: OIJ) arrived on scene to take the decedent to the medical examiner’s office. A preliminary report concurred with the statements made by Chief Hidalgo. The agents added that they could only release the age, gender and nationality of the dearly departed at this time. The neighbors who proposed breaking down the door so that they could check up on their friend explained that they knew he had a heart condition, and that they were sad to learn of his passing.
