The word “Motel” is defined in the dictionary as: “a hotel providing travelers with lodging and free parking facilities, typically a roadside hotel having rooms adjacent to an outside parking area or an urban hotel offering parking within the building”, and although technically motels in Costa Rica fit into this definition, the concept behind them is quite different to what foreigners are used to seeing in the USA or other countries.
Motels in Costa Rica are basically an option for couples to enjoy some privacy, perhaps this sounds like a normal motel, but it is not, there is no reception area here, no one sees your face when you register, and the rooms are decorated and include everything a couple will need to enjoy romance or simply a great sexual encounter.
When you first drive into a motel or “hotel de paso” (pass-by hotels), a tall fence will protect all cars coming in from the view of the street, signs will direct you to the different room options they have, regular rooms, or suites, what you see are garage doors, some open, some close, an open garage door or a green light will tell you the room is available, it may take a few minutes to drive around and find an open garage door, especially if you are visiting on Valentine’s Day, a Friday night, etc. ; other newer motels have an intercom at the entrance and the voice at the other end of it will let you know which room is available so you don’t have to drive around.
One you’ve found a room and parked your car, you press a button and the garage door will close behind you, a stairway will take you to the door of your room, where shortly after the phone will ring, information about available services will be given, these can include drinks, food, condoms, sexual lubricants, additional towels, shampoo, snacks, among others; once you are ready to pay you’ll be directed to a box in your room and you’ll hear a bell ring, a faceless hand will give you everything you’ve asked for, you hand out the payment, and you’re done; the room rental prices can range from $30-$60 depending on the motel and the room type, and this buys you a 12 hour stay. If you need anything else during your time there, all you need is to press a button and the phone will ring again.
The rooms are usually clean and simply decorated but depending on the motel and the price you pay you can find elegant rooms; decoration usually includes many mirrors, lights, radio, a T.V. with many adult channels and a fully equipped bathroom, however; the suites usually feature a Jacuzzi, a steam room, a pole dancing pole, an erotic chair, and other “amenities”, some even a “moving” bed.
When you are ready to leave simply get in your car open the garage door and head out, you might run into other cars in the motel, if you see anyone you know the code is implicit, you saw no one.
Some of the most popular motels are: Ruta 32, Hotel de Paso Flamingo, Mochileros, Hotel de Paso Princesa, Motel Dorado.
