The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is planning to increase its footprint in Latin America with BBC Earth, a specialty channel that is hoping to capture the burgeoning market of television viewers looking for quality programming related to nature, science, technology, and adventure.

According to a news report filed by Emiliano de Pablos for entertainment industry publication Variety, BBC Earth will replace the BBC HD channel that is currently broadcasting in some Latin American markets. The goal is to offer BBC Earth across 17 nations in Latin America with audio programming in its original English version while displaying subtitles in Spanish and Portuguese.

The intended date of launch is September 1st, 2015. The platforms will include satellite TV and digital cable providers, and the confirmed nations include Costa Rica as well as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Paraguay, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

BBC Earth initially launched in European markets such as Hungary and Poland with great success. Another TV market where this special interest channel has been successful is Turkey. The strategy is to reach Costa Rica and the rest of Latin America with four channels: the flagship BBC World News, BBC Earth, BBC Entertainment, and CBeebies for children.

Cable channels such as Discovery and NatGeo have found captive audiences in Costa Rica and Latin America, particularly with natural history programming; however, repetitive content and presentations of dubious quality are some of the complaints voiced by viewers of this type of channels. BBC Earth aims to change this by broadcasting documentaries narrated by David Attenborough, epic travelogues filmed in remote parts of the world, compelling life stories, scientific discoveries explained in an engaging manner, etc.

The satellite and digital cable networks that will carry BBC Earth in Costa Rica have not yet been announced; however, Sky is known to carry the entire BBC programming package for Latin America. In the future, BBC Entertainment will be replaced by new channel BBC Brit in Costa Rica and the rest of the LatAm region.
