In the frame of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, the Executive Branch announced the naming of attorney Luis Eduardo Salazar Muñoz as the Commissioner for Matters Relating the LGBTI population.

“One of the biggest challenges of the Bicentennial Government will be to deepen the culture of respect and non-discrimination, as well as the understanding and the construction through what unites us”, commented president Carlos Alvarado.

Salazar will be responsible of following up and evaluating the plans against all forms of sexual orientation and gender identity and gender expression discrimination in the public institutions.

He will promote and push forward bills and public politics geared towards the recognition of the LGBTI community rights and will have to take the lead in the creation of a National Policy for and Equal Society Free of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Gender Expression Discrimination as well as its plan of action.

The new Commissioner invited organizations that represent the LGBTI population as well as the general civil society to have an open dialogue.

Salazar was part of the team that put together and presented the Advisory Opinion inquiry to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights regarding gay marriage and the rights of the transgender population. He also had an active participation in the coordination and creation of the Regulations for Public-Private Collaboration Projects and the country’s process of adherence to the OECD, among others.
