A 65-year-old man from outside Rochester, New York, United States, died Saturday, September 16 while rappelling down from a restaurant at a Costa Rican rainforest ecolodge.

John Anderson, a respected member of the northwestern New York real estate and banking community, was reported as having traveled to Costa Rica to celebrate his 65th birthday.

His visit to the Pacuare Lodge, an upscale adventure boutique hotel in the country’s Atlantic Limón province, turned fatal when he had an accident as he left the ecolodge’s restaurant.

The lodge’s restaurant is situated on a platform in a ceiba tree, meaning customers must approach it via a zipline and then leave it by rappelling to the ground.

Anderson is reported to having experienced a mishap upon descending and fell 100 feet to his death.

Anderson was a partner at Ryco Management, a property management company in Pittsford, New York, and is former CEO of the Wilmorite mall company.

He was also the father of four.

Pittsford, a suburb of Rochester, is a town in Monroe County, New York with a population of 29,405 at the 2010 census.
