Nicaraguan Police repressed today a group of protesters and detained some 38 people, among them 2 Costa Ricans, when they planned to march on the streets of Managua against President Daniel Ortega.

The movement denominated “United for liberty” began at 9 a.m. in Managua and it was organized by the National White and Blue Unit group that is constituted by close to 40 organizations including students, business owners, agriculture workers, farmers, environmentalists and human rights defenders, however, the National Police were already ready and organized to repress the movement.

Among those detained are a couple Marcela Martinez (US citizen) and Allan Cordero Ocón (a Costa Rican citizen), according to information shared by their cousin Michael Hower via Facebook (see post below), the information has yet to be confirmed by Costa Rican authorities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated through a press release that they are in communication with the Nicaraguan authorities to confirm the detention of the Costa Rican, “Costa Rica’s General Consulate in Nicaragua asked the Nicaraguan authorities this Sunday, October 14, about the alleged detention of the Costa Rican citizen Allan Cordero Ocon, during the protests today in Managua. Oscar Camacho, General Consul to Costa Rica in Nicaragua explained that if the information is confirmed he will proceed to request a visit to the detention center to verify the health and general well-being of Cordero”, states the release.

Meanwhile, Cordero’s sister, Arlen Cordero, also shared “I want to publicly report that today my brother Allan Cordero Ocon and his wife Marcela Martínez Guzmán have been detained illegally in Nicaragua. We know that they are at the El Chipote prison”.

UPDATE> 6:49 p.m. :

Nicaraguan Police confirmed the detention of both Allan Cordero and Marcela Martinez. The information released by the Nicaraguan Police affirms that 8 of those detained were already set free, while another 30 remain in custody, among them Cordero and Martinez, accused of presumably “organizing and participating in a protest without the required police permission altering the peace and the normal social harmony”.
