While all eyes were on the Atlantic coast of southern Central America as Hurricane Otto took shape and starting moving west, a giraffe was born in Liberia, Costa Rica in the northern province of Guanacaste, reported CRHoy.com, a Spanish digital news source.
The Ponderosa Animal Park (formerly Africa Mia) welcomed baby Isabel Wednesday morning, the ninth giraffe to be born in captivity in the country, said CRHoy.com.
Isabel weighed 60 kilograms and measured 1.50 meters at birth, and will be kept in a secluded area with her mother for 6 months before being allowed to interact with other giraffes and visitors, said Tania Pivovarova, park veterinarian, to CRHoy.com.
Isabel, is the fifth giraffe born in Costa Rica to Adriana, who arrived in 2007 from Ohio, United States.
After 20 days, which are a vulnerable time, the giraffe will begin to eat branches, said Pivovarova to CRHoy.com, and added that Adriana’s high birth rate in Liberia, Guanacaste is due to the favorable conditions.
The park also is home to zebras, watusis, dromedaries, oryx, nilgas, bongos, wildebeest and ostriches, said CRHoy.com.
