The morning of Monday, January 1st, information posted by international media spoke of another family of four among the victims of the light aircraft crash that took place December 31st in the mountains of Nandayure, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The list provided yesterday to the Local press were records of a family of 5 and 5 other US tourists.
The Ministry of Public Security stated yesterday during the press conference that the confirmation on the passengers that died could only be given by the Judicial Investigation Police after the autopsies were done, this because of the explosion that occurred immediately after the plane crash. All 12 bodies were recovered from the scene last night and were transferred to forensics where the identification process began today.
The initial list provided yesterday included a family of five: Bruce, Irene, Matthew, William and Zachary Steinberg along with Leslie Weiss, Sherry Wuu, Amanda Geissler, Thibault Astruc, Charles Palmer and the pilot Juan Manuel Retana and copilot Ema Lucia Ramos, both Costa Rican.
However, according to the Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ), after checking the list with Civil Aviation, Nature Air and the Ministry of Security they realized there were discrepancies; apparently there were two light aircrafts leaving from Punta Islita to the Juan Santamaria Airport transporting in total 20 passengers, therefore, the group was divided between the two planes (10 passengers in each); because some family members wished to travel together there were some last minute switching between the two planes. The first plane which left just a few minutes before the aircraft that suffered the accident, landed with no problem at the Juan Santamaria Airport.
After carefully reviewing the information, the current list of victims (pending official identification) has been updated by OIJ and includes: Bruce (50), Irene, Matthew (14), William (18) and Zachary (20) Steinberg ; Leslie Weiss, her husband Mitchell Weiss, their daughter Hanna Weiss (19) and son Ari Moses Weiss (16), the last victim is Amanda Geissler (33).
The Steinberg family is from the state of New York , while the Weiss family was from Florida.
Neighbors of the area who witnessed the moment the accident occurred stated that they saw the plane flying very low and eventually turning as if to head back to the landing strip.
The authorities suspect mechanical problems or weather conditions is what has caused the tragedy.
