In Costa Rica it is not uncommon to spot the President and former Presidents walking freely and with very little security, however, the ongoing labor strike that began September 10 has forced the Direction of Intelligence and Security (DIS) to strengthen the security for the President and other political figures.

This Wednesday when several members of the Government, including President Alvarado, were taking part on an official act at the National Theater in downtown San Jose, a group of strikers gathered outside the theater yelling and insulting the President who had to be escorted out by the Public Police Force that had to contain the crowd, according to Daniel Calderon, Director of the Public Police Force, the crowd caused damages to several police cars and they seized artifacts known as “miguelitos” and that are used to puncture tires.

President Carlos Alvarado, shared the following message after the incident: “Let’s not let anyone take away our peace. Let’s not let anyone take away our peace when we transit through our country. Lets not let anyone take away the opportunity to discuss democratically, in peace, with respect. That’s why we have democratic institutions in this country, some of the most solid in the region, to hold these discussions (…) If someone still has doubts, we are not going to let up, we will continue working for the good of Costa Rica”.
