Costa Rican president, Luis Guillermo Solis condemned on Tuesday the “savage terrorist attack” in Brussels that left at least 34 people dead and at least another 150 injured or wounded.

The Islamic State (ISIS) is claiming responsibility for the suicide bomb attacks on the Brussels airport and a rush-hour metro train in the Belgian capital.

“I condemn the brutal terrorist attack in Brussels. Such a barbaric act that has no justification except the rejection of the highest and most sacred values of the human family on the part of the perpetrators, seriously damages international peace and security,” President Solis said in a statement.

President Solis expressed Costa Rica’s “feelings of solidarity and mourning” with the Belgian people and the European Union as a whole.

There were 120 Costa Rican citizens in Brussels when the attacks occurred, according to Costa Rica’s Foreign Ministry. None of those citizens are believed to be amongst the dead, though two Costa Ricans were reportedly at the scene of one of the attacks, which occurred at the city’s international airport.

The coordinated terrorist assault triggered security alerts across Europe and drew global expressions of support, four days after Brussels police had captured the prime surviving suspect in Islamic State’s attacks on Paris last November.

“We must be together regardless of nationality or race or faith in fighting against the scourge of terrorism,” U.S. President Barack Obama told a news conference in Cuba, where the US president is on a historic visit. “We can and we will defeat those who threaten the safety and security of people all around the world.”
