A group of students from different public universities were participating in a protest near the Outlet Mall in San Pedro. Apparently some of them were blocking the road and creating problems for drivers, the police intervened at which point the group threw rocks at them and took off running, in response, the police began a chase, and according to a journalist of Semanario Universidad, the officers were aggressive and even hit a couple of the protesters, they took hold of him but let him go when he said he was a journalist, the chase continued all the way to the campus of the University of Costa Rica where reportedly a few police officers entered the campus and beat one of the students.

After these events students of the public universities raised their voices and accused the Public Police Force of repression, violence and violating the autonomy of the University.

Four people were detained and according to information published by Semanario Universidad three are students of different public universities, among them, the University of Costa Rica, the National University and the Costa Rican Technology Institute; one being a minor.

Henning Jensen, dean of the University of Costa Rica, and who has been participating actively in the protests over the past few days, condemned the actions of the police, “I feel the most profound rejection to the use of force in the university campus. I condemn the aggression of which were victims the university students and our journalist. I demand a public apology from President Carlos Alvarado. I remind him and the police force that the University has autonomy in its campus”, said Jensen.

The University of Costa Rica, the National University and the Technology Institute called on their students to join the pacific protests tomorrow in defense of their autonomy.

President Alvarado stated that he had already ordered an investigation on the acts that took place, he also affirmed he spoke to Jensen and agreed to meet Thursday morning to analyze the situation with the objective elements at hand.
