Istanbul, Jun 18 (EFE).- Istanbul police used tear gas Saturday to break up a demonstration protesting the attack last Thursday against fans who went to a party thrown by the Radiohead band, which was celebrating the publication of its new disc, “A Moon Shaped Pool.”

About 100 fans gathered Saturday around 6:00 p.m. at a square in Istanbul’s downtown Cihangir neighborhood to denounce the aggression of some 20 radicals who violently assaulted a music store and injured one person last Thursday on grounds that people were drinking alcohol at the Radiohead party during the month of Ramadan.

Police intervened immediately with tear gas bombs and scattered the Radiohead fans, witnesses of the incident told EFE.

The gas affected numerous homes in the neighborhood in what appeared to be a replay of the anti-government demonstrations in the summer of 2013.

According to the daily Cumhuriyet, some protesters put up barricades to block access for police cars.

The aggression on Thursday against the music store highlighted the tension between radical Islamic collectives and the secular population in the neighborhood.

The Radiohead group itself issued a statement Friday expressing solidarity with its fans, and slammed the aggression.

In this Istanbul neighborhood with some of the liveliest nightlife in the city, bars regularly serve alcohol even during the month of Ramadan, something the Islamist collectives consider unacceptable. EFE
