Too little too late, that sums Bryan Vasquez’ performance against Mexico’s Raymundo Beltrán, the fight took place Saturday, August 5th at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California and judges gave the victory by majority decision to the Mexican.

The fight lacked excitement from beginning to end, Vásquez moved well , he always does a great job of this, and kept his distance knowing that his opponent had the height and reach advantage, however, he played it too safe. A boxer fighting as the underdog knows they have to go the extra mile, and the Costa Rican made the mistake of saving the best for last, and it was too little, too late. At some point during the fight Vásquez also seemed to have injured his left hand, (at this point no official statement has been given), but that could explain the few punches thrown by Vásquez in rounds 7 and 8.

Beltrán was certainly more effective, probably even a little more than the scorecards showed: 95-95, 96-94 x 2. The Mexican, was in control most of the fight, but he didn’t take advantage of his opponent’s mistakes, he forgot to work the body, had trouble figuring out Vasquez’ game and that made him look bad in several rounds,slow, he was in trouble at the very end, when “Tiquito” decided to finally let his hands go instead of moving around the ring, but he pulled through as he often does and his efforts throughout the fight got him the W.

Beltrán’s size also played an important role in the outcome, Vasquez’ height will be a foregoing issue if he stays at 135 lbs.

The victory puts Beltrán in a great position for another world title shot and to get the green card he’s wanted for so long.

Vásquez, on the other hand adds a third loss to his professional record, being such a talented boxer this is truly a shame, but it’s not the end of the world, perhaps it will be harder for “Tiquito” to bounce back from his reputation for not making weight than from his loss in the ring. At almost 30 years of age, Bryan still has a lot more to show, he is the most talented boxer Costa Rica has had so far, let’s hope his dream of holding a world championship belt doesn’t end here.
