The Prusia Forest part of the Irazú Volcano National Park, in the province of Cartago is one of the preferred destinations for tourists looking for a one-day tour; it actually increased its visitation in a 200% from 2015 to 2016 year in which it received almost 77 thousand visitors, the majority national tourists.
Park authorities consider that the increase in visitation obeyed to the fixing of the road, the promotion of the park as a location for sporting events and the use of social media as a marketing tool.
Prusia offers 16 kilometers (10 miles) of natural trails. Exploring the park can take up to 4-5 hours stopping to enjoy the surrounding nature.
Pine trees and eucalyptus trees fill the air with nice, healing smells. There are areas where visitors can stop for some rest under the trees or have a picnic. This park is open every day from 8 a.m. through 3:30 p.m., the entrance to the park is found before the Irazú Volcano, on the road to the old Carlos Durán Sanatorium; visitors should take appropriate clothing and a raincoat or jacket even if the skies are clear, sunblock and insect repellent are also necessary. No camping or pets are allowed.
