Family-owned franchisee brings the “Original New York Pizza” to Costa Rica, opens two stores.

San José, Costa Rica. The Sbarro brand, located in more than 28 countries all around world, opened its first two stores in the country October & December, respectively, of 2019. The “Original New York Pizza” brings the flavor of a globally known brand for New York Style XL slices, along with an Italian background of delicious recipes.

This family owned franchisee came along from an idea to bring the brand to the country by the Moya family and its partners, within the main goal of providing the same quality products of the brand in other countries. In 2019, SBARRO Costa Rica opened its first two stores located in Food Court N2, Lincoln Plaza (Moravia) and Plaza Amara, Guachipelín (Escazú), along with a long-term plan of more openings in the upcoming years.

In 1956, Carmela and Gennaro Sbarro opened the doors to their Italian salumeria in Brooklyn, New York. Carmela “Mama” Sbarro made pizza slices for shift workers looking for a quick meal. Her slices were so popular that they soon opened a second location focused solely on pizza. Since then, Sbarro has brought the best pasta, salad, and of course the XL NY slice to 630 eateries across 28 countries. The brand strictly follows and works by its motto, thanks to such it has led to big success around the world, which goes by: “Handmade, fresh all day, with hand stretched dough, San Marzano style tomato sauce, 100% milk mozzarella”.

“The idea of bringing the brand to our home country was a dream come true for our family. From many years back, Sbarro has been our favorite pizza, mostly for its high-quality products and the warm, positive experience we always had when visiting a store, almost making it feel like home. We wanted to bring that experience and quality products to Costa Rica, where we are certain that those who have tried the brand feel the same way about us, and those who have not, will certainly love it”, says Jose Daniel Moya, co-owner and marketing manager for Costa Rica.
