The National Commission of Risk Prevention and Emergency Attention (CNE) and the Technical Assessment Vulcanology Committee (CAT) insist that the security of the people visiting the areas close to the Turrialba volcano is a priority, and for this reason the current restrictions most remain in such way that visitors must stay within a 2 km radius (1.24 miles) and when necessary at a distance of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). These security perimeters could be extended if viewed necessary.

The current characteristics of the volcanic eruptions, marked by the constant emission of gas, frequent explosions and variable energy with expulsion of ash and at times incandescent rocks and sediment, makes for a wonderful spectacle, but it also makes the area highly insecure for visitors and tourists.

The CNE and the Municipal Emergency Committee of Turrialba, inform that the studies related to the volcanic threat which are based in the eruptive history of the volcano, establish a map of volcanic danger, where a minimum radius of 2 km around the peak is marked, this area is susceptible to the fall of rocks at high temperature and speed, as well as frequent ash fall, and the possibility of pyroclastic flow (fast-moving current of hot gas and rock) to the sides of the volcano in the event of bigger eruptions.

Authorities have reported that park rangers are constantly escorting out visitors that violate the security perimeter, during weekends the groups of people that disregard the security measures can be of between 20 and 50; which is why they urge visitors to respect the security instructions and warnings displayed in the sector.
