Washington, Apr 2 (EFE).- Airbnb, the online lodgings marketplace, announced Thursday it is extending its operation to Cuba, becoming one of the first companies offering home-rentals to U.S. citizens authorized to travel to the island.

Following last December’s announcement of a thaw in U.S.-Cuba relations, President Barack Obama signed an executive order lifting some of the restrictions on travel to Cuba in what was seen as a first step toward the end of Washington’s economic embargo against the island.

Even with the liberalization, however, Americans wanting to go to Cuba must prove that their trips are connected with educational activities, professional meetings, humanitarian projects or sports competitions.

“Today, we’re proud to welcome Cuba to the global Airbnb community. Starting this week, hosts in Cuba will list over 1,000 of their homes onAirbnb,” the company said on its Web site. “For the first time in decades, licensed American travelers will have the chance to experience authentic Cuban hospitality at homes across the island.”

Cuba already has a significant network of private homes offering lodging to foreign visitors and the sector is expected to grow in tandem with moves toward a rapprochement with Washington.

Major U.S. hotel companies have expressed interest in establishing a presence in Cuba, but they face significant administrative hurdles.

Several airlines are also taking steps to offer direct commercial service to Cuba. Until now, charter flights have been the only means for Cubans residing in the United States to visit their homeland. EFE
