Guayabo de Bagaces in Guanacaste shares limits with Upala, Liberia, Carrillo, Cañas and Nicoya, and is just 15 kilometers north from Miravalles Volcano, it’s in the foothills of this volcano where we can find the Miravalles Geothermal project.

The area is visited by many tourists, naturally because of the Volcano, and also because of several touristic centers located in the area, many of which suffered consequences, and two had to shut doors in view of the damage left behind by Hurricane Otto.

ThermoMania, a touristic complex located in La Fortuna de Bagaces, Guanacaste which offered natural hot springs, pools and a water-park, was one of the places that suffered severe damages caused by Hurricane Otto.

A 40% of structural damages and at least 60% of the property also was devastated these are the estimated losses of the complex according to Geovanny Chavez, general manager of ThermoMania, “When it comes to the land, we have damages in around 60% of it, the area of the farm, the museum and the antique house. Structural damages in at least 40% of the property and the the spa, pools and water-park are dirty and also present some damages”.

Right in this area four people lost their life. The company published a message in their Facebook page extending their condolences to the families of the victims: “We deeply regret the deaths in the area, we urge you to collaborate with the authorities in any way possible. We join the national mourning”.

Yoko Termales another hot spring recreation center and hotel located in the same area reported severe damages and was also forced to shut doors for indefinite time.

In another area of Guanacaste, in between Avellanas Beach and Tamarindo Beach, we can find Eco Lodge El Sabanero, this area was not affected much by the Hurricane but the indirect effect of it caused the death of a worker of the hotel, German Werner Frazen.
