A bill analyzed by the Legislative Assembly proposes a change in the Transit Law to allow the Public Force (Fuerza Publica) to act as traffic cops when necessary and have the ability to extend tickets and fines for law violations. The bill received the support of 51 deputies.

The project establishes the cooperation between both police forces and gives one year for the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) to coordinate with Public Security on clear regulations that indicate the situations and authority that the Police Force will have to act in traffic related situations.

The cooperation will include routine traffic activities such as assisting with car accidents, routine police controls or special events.

The reform also includes the obligation to offer proper training to the Public Force officers so they can carry out the new duties accordingly.

Currently the Ministry of Public Security has a total of 16,647 officers between Public Force, Aerial Surveillance, Coast Guard Services, Drug Control Police, Frontier Police and the National Police School.

The changes to the Transit Law will also allow that, following the necessary training, the Municipality Police Officers can also act as Traffic Police in specific situations.
