The company Standard Fruit Company in Costa Rica, a subsidiary of Dole, closed their work-center in the province of Limon, which included an operations department, terminal and workshop, affecting a total of 240 employees.
The reason of the closure is due to the fact that the operations handled by this division are now offered by APM Terminals with a rate that is more convenient for the company.
After negotiating with the employees that were fired , the Standard Fruit Company will be paying the corresponding severance to each of the employees affected and in addition will recognize three months of pay, the school packages usually given to employees at the start of the school year and will also pay in advance the scholarships for the 2019 school year.
The land were the workshop is located was offered in loan to the State for one year for it to be used for training and to help facilitate the creation of new companies by the former workers so they can offer services to Dole and other companies.
The company APM Terminals also indicated through a statement that ¨The Social-Economic Impact Study (video included below), calculates the number of jobs to be created in 147 thousand in the entire country in the next 10 years. Without even having began operations at 100% capacity, the company has already generated 540 direct jobs¨.
