Los Angeles, May 3 (EFE).– George Miller, one of the great action film directors, is returning to the genre 30 years after his latest movie with a new version of “Mad Max,” the classic that launched Mel Gibson to stardom and which now stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.

Although the British director said at a Los Angeles press conference attended by Efe that at first he felt intimidated because “Mad Max” is synonymous with Gibson, he also felt enthusiastic about the project with the Australian actor’s support.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” will begin showing at U.S. theaters on May 15, and takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which Max Rockatansky, played by Hardy, becomes the slave of a dictator and his army of warlords.

However, Max gets the help of a female fighter, Theron, and a group of women seeking a hopeful future.

Theron said she was very grateful to be part of the film but found it especially difficult, even disorienting, to act without any dialogue, an intentional device of the director, who preferred to let the actors’ faces speak for them.

Also starring in the film are Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, Abbey Lee Kershaw and Courtney Eaton, among others.

The South African Theron said that the heavy female cast component in the $150-million film was “a breath of fresh air.”

Miller, 70, filmed “Mad Max” in 1979, followed by “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” (1981) and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985) and if his current film hits it big the indications are that there could be up to three sequels. EFE
