The sleepy town of Comunidad, in the Carrillo canton of Guanacaste woke up to news of a ghastly incident that transpired on one of its few roads. According to metro beat reporter Carlos Eduardo Vargas of national newspaper La Nacion, a guest at the Flor de Itabo resort, which is located about a kilometer from the beach community of Playas del Coco, died when he purposely threw himself at a moving bus.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 26^th, 2013. The report from La Nacion quoted Officer Oscar Araya of the Costa Rica Transit Police, who confirmed that the victim was a 40-year old man who was staying at the Flor de Itabo Hotel and Casino. He has been identified as Kent Fuzze, a citizen of the United States.

Witnesses explained that the man ran into the bus and was dragged underneath upon impact. A somber photograph published by La Nacion showed the body trapped under the front tire of the bus on the driver’s side. Transit Police officers who responded to the scene ran the license plates and found that the bus was compliant with regard to registration, permits and technical inspections.

Employees from the Flor de Itabo, which is named after the Yucca elephantipes edible flower that grows abundantly in Guanacaste and other parts of Costa Rica, explained that the guest had been acting very strangely since the very early hours of Saturday. He took a taxi from the hotel and tried to jump while it was going at high speed down the highway; for this reason, the taxi driver decided to drop him off in Comunidad, where he ran away and into the bus that ended his life.
