A young surfer who was enjoying long, glassy rights at Playa Guacalillo, located in Tarcoles and not far from one of the busiest tourist hotspots of Costa Rica, was surprised to find the lifeless body of a corpulent man adrift in the surf. According to a news report by journalist Greivin Rodriguez of daily tabloid Diario Extra, the surfer was waiting for a set when he sighted something strange floating ahead of him.

Cristian Rojas, a resident of Jaco Beach, paddled out to take a closer look at what he had seen. He came up on the body of an overweight male whose sole piece of clothing consisted of a tiny g-string, smaller than a Speedo bathing suit. Mr. Rojas immediately called out to his fellow surfers, who rushed to notify the police of their strange discovery.

Officers from the Garabito precinct of Fuerza Publica, the national police force of Costa Rica, along with rescuers from the Red Cross arrived to bring the decedent to the beach. By then, the surf had turned from glassy to choppy, this made it safer to bring the departed back to terra firma since caimans from the nearby Tarcoles river do not usually enter the rough surf.

According to preliminary observations by forensic staff from the Office of Judicial Investigations (Spanish initials: OIJ), the man was probably 45 years old when he drowned. What makes this finding mysterious is not so much the gnomish swimwear the rotund victim wore on his last day on this mortal coil; there have been no recent reports of anyone missing in the nearby beaches, rivers or lagoons.
