In Costa Rica, there is a place where men and women, individually or as couples, can be gently touched and fondled in their erogenous zones for the purpose of inciting pleasure and relaxation. This place, which is located in the mountains of Escazu, has a jacuzzi and offers wine to guests.
The above may sound like a description of a brothel, but it is actually a Tantric massage spa operated by a woman named Nubia Salas. In a recent interview with Sergio Jimenez of online daily La Prensa Libre (the oldest news publication still operational in Costa Rica) Ms. Salas explains that many people have an incorrect view of what Tantric therapy really is; people with dirty minds call it prostitution when it is actually a therapeutic treatment.
Tantrism is defined as a doctrine of enlightenment; a realization of the oneness of one’s self and the visible world; combines elements of Hinduism and paganism including magical and mystical elements like mantras and mudras and erotic rites. Tantrism is especially influential in Tibet; in Costa Rica and other Western nations, practitioners such as Ms. Salas incorporate some Tantric elements into massage and physical therapy.
In the Tantric worldview, a person who is sexually satisfied can achieve enlightenment through happiness. There is some level of eroticism that leads to pleasure and satisfaction, but Ms. Salas is quick to point out that no mutual touching or intercourse is involved.
According to Ms. Salas, the spa has hundreds of clients, many of them couples who probably leave the center in Escazu extremely turned on and ready to explore each other sexually afterwards. Ms. Salas also mentioned that curious women in Costa Rica enjoy learning about Tantric touch so that they can practice with their partners.
Nonetheless, Tantric massage is not the most popular massage therapy requested; that would be the Hawaiian technique, which calls for the use of coconut products without touching the erogenous zones.
