Tigo Costa Rica -formerly known as Amnet- formalized the brand change and introduced news for the rest of the year. The company’s subscribers will be able to watch thousands of hours of HD content through their new Video On Demand (VOD) service in the short term. Besides, HD subscribers will have access to YouTube and other apps through their TV sets as of August.

Tigo is Costa Rica’s biggest cable operator, with 189,000 Pay TV subscribers up to Q1 2012. There are 57,000 digital cable customers among them -using the Motorola solution- and 6,300 with the HD service.

The company will implement their first VOD system in Costa Rica, which will allow their digital customers to access a 3,000 movie catalogue. Carlos Maldonado, Tigo’s Innovation Regional Manager, explained to La Nacion newspaper that the service would be similar to the one offered by Netflix. However, since Tigo is a cable operator it will be able to offer premieres quicker and include access to a certain number of movies as part of a monthly package.
