The Observatory of Volcanic and Seismic Activity in Costa Rica (OVSICORI) gave an update on the status of the Turrialba Volcano, confirming that in the past three days there have been no more ash emissions but it is emitting a passive but important flow of magmatic gases at high temperatures of 600⁰-800⁰C (1112⁰-1472⁰F).
These gases originate from a body of magma reach in volatiles “which suggests that the volcanic system is open enough to allow the flow of matter and heat to the surface. The flow of heat of this shallow magma heats the rocks surrounding the volcanic conducts and produces a shiny and dazzling light which is perceptible at night in the interior of the West Crater”, states the report; “The West Crater is obstructed again which causes pressure to the interior of the volcano, for this reason, the possibility exists of a new strombolian (relatively mild) eruption in the next hours or days”.
According to the instruments of the Monitoring Station of Gases and Volcanic Sprays of OVSICORI located in Coronado, San Jose, registers since February 2, 2018 and to date a strong emission of sulfur (SO2), which originates from column of gas of the Turrialba Volcano.
The seismicity in the last 48 hours has presented a relatively low level, which for their characteristics signal the transportation of fluids, (water, gas, and even magma) from the deep levels to the surface through cracks, cavities and conducts in the interior of the volcano.
