The biggest football event ever organized in Costa Rica will not be broadcast in its entirety by local television stations. TV networks Repretel and Teletica have announced that they will only show a few of the football matches of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which will be held at stadiums in Alajuela, Liberia and San Jose.
Teletica will carry some of the international matches on Channel 7 and others on its new Teletica Deportes Plus (TD+) specialty channel. Repretel has thus far announced that it will broadcast some games on Channel 4, which is the network’s lowest-rated TV station.
The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup kicks off this Saturday, March 15th with matches at the Chinese-donated National Stadium in La Sabana Metropolitan Park and the Edgardo Baltodano Stadium in Liberia, province of Guanacaste.
As previously reported by the Costa Rica Star, the Baltodano Stadium is the brightest sporting facility in Costa Rica thanks to the recent update of its lighting system, which exceeds FIFA’s requirements for TV broadcasts in High Definition (HD).
The first matches will kick-off at 5:00 pm. Italy will face Zambia at the National Stadium while North Korea will face Ghana in Guanacaste. The Italy-Zambia match will be broadcast on TD+ and Channel 4, but no local stations will carry the match in Guanacaste, which has the potential of being more interesting since the North Korean U-17 Women’s National Team is one of the favorites in this World Cup.
The long-awaited match between Costa Rica and Venezuela will take place at the National Stadium at 8:00 pm. This promises to be an exciting game, but for some reason it will not be broadcast on HD. Channel 4 and TD+ will show this game on their legacy Standard Definition feeds, but those who wish to watch Germany play Canada in Guanacaste will have to check their cable and satellite TV listings and hope that their local provider will carry it.
As explained by Solo Futbol, a popular football blog in Costa Rica, the national networks have been given ample license by FIFA to broadcast as many matches as possible, but they have chosen to show only some games instead of the entire World Cup, which is not something that happens on any given Sunday.
