A six-year old boy and an adult male are the latest victims of attacks by large reptiles in Costa Rica. The incidents took place during Holy Saturday in the communities of Parrita and Los Chiles.

According to a news report filed by Tatiana Gutierrez of online news daily Costa Rica Hoy, a six-year old boy was rushed to the public hospital in Quepos after he was brutally attacked by a crocodile in the Pueblo Nuevo community of the Parrita canton, located in the province of Puntarenas.

A Red Cross spokesman explained that the child suffered multiple bites on his chest and on his back. The boy was admitted to the emergency room in delicate condition. It is not known whether the boy is a resident of Parrita or if he was visiting along with his parents during the long Easter weekend.

At the Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge, located in the canton of Los Chiles in the province of Alajuela, a man was bitten by a large reptile that emerged from a swamp. According to a news report filed by Josue Alvarado of online news daily Costa Rica Hoy, the man was not sure whether the animal was a cayman (Caiman sclerops) or a crocodile; both are known to swim the wetlands, canals and rivers of Caño Negro all the way to Tortuguero. Nonetheless, the reptile gripped the man’s hand with is jaws.

The bitten man was able to break free from the reptilian bite and sought medical attention. Red Cross volunteers gave him first aid before transporting him to the public hospital in Los Chiles, where he was reportedly treated with sutures and topical antibiotics before being discharged in stable condition.
