Many in the San José metropolitan area snoozed through the 5:28 quake that rocked Pavones in southern Costa Rica, but most were rocked by the lesser magnitude one that occurred half an hour later.

At 5:50 a.m., a 3.2 tremor was registered 7 kms southeast of Ciudad Colón, a small city west of the capital city. Initial reports from the National  University’s Volcanology and Seismology Obnsevatory (Ovsicori-UNA) show it had a depth of 5 kms.

The epicenter of the 5.2 tremor in the southern Pacific region was located 36 kms south of Pavones, Golfito, Puntarenas; Pavones is well-known surf beach. This quake occurred at a depth of 54 kms and was due to a subduction, said Ovsicori-UNA on their official Facebook page.

This 5.2 earthquake was the latest in a series that have occurred over the past week along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.

Several soccer fans saw the jolts as a first warning for the Mexico team which is here to face off against Costa Rica tonight in an important World Cup qualifying match, according to comments on Facebook.
