On September 3rd, 2014, the Embassy of the United States in San Jose, Costa Rica, published an announcement related to the fees charged by the Consular Section for various services related to travel, immigration and citizenship. Not all fee changes represent an increase; for example, the filing fee for employment-based visas has gone down by $60. Of special note is the fee charged for the controversial renunciation of U.S. citizenship proceeding, which skyrocketed from $450 to $2,350. The process of saying goodbye to U.S. citizenship is a controversial topic that has been discussed on various occasions by The Costa Rica Star. It is related to the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), a law that has been criticized as having been enacted for the purpose of empowering the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to snoop on the bank accounts of U.S. taxpayers abroad. Beginning on September 12, some Consular Section fees will change. Please be aware that the non-immigrant visa fee (B1/B2 visas) will remain the same (USD 160), as will the price of passports for U.S. citizens. Changing fees E Visas (for traders and investors, authorized based on trade and navigation agreements between the U.S. and other countries): from USD 270 to USD 205. K Visas (fiancée [and fiancé] visas): from USD 240 to USD 265. [Border] Crossing Card: from USD 15 to USD 16. Immediate Relative/Family Based Immigrant Visas: from USD 230 to USD 325. Employment-based Immigrant Visas: from USD 405 from USD 345. Other Immigrant Visas (I-360 and special Immigrant Visas): from USD 220 to USD 205. Waiver of two-year residency requirement: from USD 215 to USD 120. Determining returning resident status: from USD 275 to USD 180. Renunciation of U.S. [Citizenship]: from USD 450 to USD 2,350. These amendments are based on the most recent review of current consular fees. Consular fees were last adjusted in April 2012.
