In the small town of Madison, New Jersey, a 50-year-old Costa Rican man last week was turned over to U.S. federal authorities after he was found to be on the run from justice in Costa Rica for the rape of a minor, according to reports on July 28 in the Daily Record of Rockaway, NJ

Eugenio Castillo Muñoz, a resident of Waverly Place in Madison – a borough of some 16,000 inhabitants in Morris County, New Jersey – reported to police on Sunday, July 23 that he had been robbed at gunpoint. Police allege he faked the robbery, said the Daily Record news.

And it looks like the drama may get him deported from the U.S. when Friday he was released from the Morris County jail into federal custody for his fugitive status.

Interpol and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials both have detainers for Castillo Muñoz. In presenting this information, Morris County Assistant Prosecutor Melanie Gross ordered his release to federal authorities at a session in which the case was reviewed by Judge Ira Cohen in Morristown on Friday, July 28. No information as to when the rape crime in Costa Rica occured were provided at the hearing.

On Sunday, July 23, Castillo Muñoz called police to report having been robbed by two men at gunpoint in a tunnel that leads to the entrance to a building on Main Street in Madison. He said $800 was stolen from him.

After Madison police reviewed video surveillance camera images of the area, they determined Castillo Muñoz made up the robbery story. This led to him being charged with perjury, according to reports in the Daily Record.

Madison police were reported as saying the video cameras recorded him entering the tunnel and then exiting the other side in a matter of 23 seconds, and no other people were seen entering or exiting while he was passing through. This information contradicted Muñoz Castillo’s version in which he said he was in the tunnel for about six minutes.

After being shown the video surveillance clip, Muñoz Castillo changed his tune, and said he, “saw visions, and ‘El Diablo’ was the one who took his money inside the tunnel,” according to police reports cited in the Daily Record.

The man also gave his age to the court as “52, more or less,” but his documents show he is 50 years old, detailed the Daily Record.
