The current Women’s Football Champion of the World is the United States, and the most recent match by Team USA against the National Women’s Football Team of Costa Rica proves why. Playing before a crowd of more than 44,000 at the Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, the National Team of Costa Rica (Las Ticas) were blanked out by a barrage of eight goals against zero.
Team USA is currently enjoying a Victory Tour organized by U.S. Soccer, and this match against fellow CONCACAF opponents Las Ticas inaugurated the tour. Christen Press scored a hat trick for Team USA, and so did Heather O’Reilly. The key player for Costa Rica was the always spectacular goalkeeper Dinnia Diaz, who was quite busy during the lopsided match.
Although Miss Diaz had plenty of cat-like saves yesterday afternoon, two heart-stopping plays were highlighted by the U.S. Soccer match report: the first one was a rush against Meghan Klingenberg, who dribbled past the entire Tica backline by herself, and the second was an epic flight to punch the ball high over the crossbar on a rocket shot on goal by Shannon Boxx. The U.S. goalposts were not so busy, although the excellent and controversial goalkeeper Hope Solo was forced to hustle once against Karla VIillalobos, who was close to scoring on a diagonal assist.
Also reported by U.S. Soccer were the following interesting facts:
- The crowd of 44,028 at Heinz Field is the largest stand-alone attendance on home soil in the history of [Team USA]
- The 8-0 wins ties the USA biggest win in the history of its series with Costa Rica. The WNT beat the Ticas by the same score line on two previous occasions, in 2000 and 2012.
- The USA remains perfect against Costa Rica, improving its all-time record to 11-0-0.
Another interesting tidbit to add to the history of women’s football by the national teams of Costa Rica and the U.S. is that Las Ticas will once again face their most formidable foes again on August 19th at Finlay Stadium in the Scenic City of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Tickets for that match have already been sold out.
