Costa Rica’s National Coast Guard officers rescued this morning an American family drifting in a kayak in Pacific waters near Penca Island, in the northern jurisdiction of Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, near the Nicaraguan border.

The four tourists, two adult males and two young girls, headed out in a sail kayak to enjoy the beauties of this coastal area, but didn’t count on a sudden change in weather conditions, reported the Public Security Ministry.

Sudden strong winds and waves left them adrift, and in grave danger.

Thanks to the quick intervention by Coast Guard officers from the Flamingo, Guanacaste station, who left on a patrol boat, the American family was located and rescued.

The children had no injuries, nor did their parents.

They have been identified as Paul Rinta, 42 and Epic Wales, 42, and their children, Summer, 5, and Skiler, 3.

The National Coast Guard confirmed that the family was brought ashore safely.

Public Safety Coast Guard maintains various safety patrols along both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. They regularly rescue people who are at danger at sea as part of their work, said the officials.
