Costa Rica became the first country to gather 25 tons of plastic in under 8 hours, this gives the country the Guinness Record which was previously held by India which had gathered 23 tons in less than 8 hours.

Only type 1 and 2 plastic bottles counted.

The activity took place at the Pedregal Event Center in San Antonio de Belén, Heredia, here all the plastic was gathered and weighed which required the collaboration of different private companies, volunteers, municipalities, public institutions and the use of tow trucks, trucks and weighing scales.

The entire process of recollection was videotaped with the purpose of guaranteeing the transparency of the process, the video will be sent to personnel of the Guinness World Records for them to officially award the record.

“The Guinness Record is just a symbolic act, we can’t just do this one day and not the next, if we are responsible consumers, we need to make sure that the containers and packages we use end up in the right place”, said Karla Chaves from Ecolones.

Ecolones Costa Rica is a digital platform that awards “virtual money” or credits to users in exchange for recycling, as they accumulate these credits they can opt for discounts on different products and services offered by participating companies.
