A wildfire that started at 9 p.m. of Friday, April 14 has affected a large area of the mountain known as “Cerro Pelado” (Pelado Peak) in Tilarán, Guanacaste; the burn bodies of two adult men were found in a hillside, authorities will have to confirm if their death obeys to the fire or if they lost their lives under different circumstances.

The windy conditions of this area and the dryness of the land due to the summer have made the job of the firefighters complicated, as the flames continue to spread.

Cerro Pelado receives the visit of many tourists that enjoy trekking and hiking , many also use the area for camping.

“As a consequence of the location and topography this fire advanced fast, it burned practically the entire peak; we don’t know for sure if the victims died due to the smoke and fire or for other reasons”, explained the official release sent out by Costa Rica’s fire department.

So far this year eight people have lost their lives in fires in Costa Rica, among them four children, the last victim was a 15 year old who lost his life early this morning when a fire burned down his house in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste.

Guanacaste registers the biggest number of forest fires every year, the majority of which are caused by human activities.
