Brenda Castro, a stunning Caribbean woman who was crowned Miss Costa Rica earlier this year, will represent our country at the next Miss Universe pageant. Such was the announcement made during last night’s broadcast of 7 Estrellas, an entertainment news magazine produced by national television network Teletica.

As previously reported by The Costa Rica Star:

one of the organizations that decided to break off its business relationship with Mr. Trump is the Miss Costa Rica pageant, which has elected to not send a candidate to the Miss Universe pageant owned by presidential hopeful. Miss Costa Rica is owned by television network Teletica; prior to making the announcement of its decision, the network evaluated popular sentiment in our country on this issue.

The Miss Costa Rica organization made a decision similar to other nations such as Mexico, which decided not to send a contestant to Miss Universe and to not air the pageant on television. In a message broadcast in July, Teletica explained:

We reject the xenophobic and offensive declarations made by the owner of the Miss Universe pageant against our Mexican brothers and against all Latin Americans. The opinions of Donald Trump go against the most fundamental principles of Costa Ricans, which are the same principles that guide the work performed [by Teletica.]

Teletica suggested that it would only reconsider its decision if Mr. Trump either apologized for his asinine remarks or if he relinquished control of Miss Universe. While the former has yet to occur, the latter did take place a few weeks ago as Mr. Trump reportedly purchased the interest held by NBC in Miss Universe and then quickly selling it off to WME/IMG, an organization with considerable experience in the beauty pageant market.

In previous interviews, Miss Castro explained that she had been preparing for Miss Universe with language instruction and social outreach “just in case.”
