The body of a 19-year old man from Germany, who had been swimming with friends in a river over the weekend, was recovered by Red Cross rescuers on Monday.

As previously reported by sister publication ICR News, also known as Inside Costa Rica:

The missing 18-year-old German man identified [as Maximilian Jonas Berger], who was reportedly a firefighter in his home country, went missing after falling into the Savegre River in the area of Portalon, Quepos around 1 p.m. on Sunday. It was reportedly raining heavily at the time.

The weather conditions on Sunday did not allow the Red Cross to deploy its aquatic rescue unit, which includes three divers, until the next morning. As the divers searched the swimming hole where the German man was reported missing, three rescuers searched the waters near the riverbank.

Not far from the Portalon district, the Red Cross was conducting another aquatic rescue operation involving a foreigner. 21-year old Deon Donte Greene from the United States was last seen entering the surf in Playa Linda on Sunday afternoon.

Mr. Greene is believed to be from North Carolina, and he was reportedly in Costa Rica as part of a university exchange program. In this particular operation, the Red Cross assigned eight rescue technicians and coordinated the search effort with the National Coast Guard Service.

In the case of Mr. Greene, Red Cross spokesman Ronald Vega from Puntarenas explained that the victim entered the water at a time when rip currents were particularly strong. As of Monday afternoon, the search was ongoing.

Playa Linda is located near the Manuel Antonio National Park, a popular tourist destinnation in the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

The Red Cross further reported that 87 fatal aquatic accidents have taken place in Costa Rica since January 2105, and thus emergency officials remind the public of the need to take precautions when entering rivers, lakes, creeks, or the ocean.
