Ziad Akl brother of Elias Akl, the Lebanese man who was killed outside a private school in Guachipelin, Escazu, back in March 2017, and who had been in preventive custody on separate charges of attempted murder, extortion and kidnap after being arrested trying to flee the country at the Juan Santamaria International Airport, just hours after his brother had been killed, was released Friday.

Akl was released by the Pavas Criminal Court which established injunction measures like signing every 15 days.

The Akl brothers apparently had a money-lending organization which they ran in a thug-like manner, threatening debtors, holding them against their will and using violence to get them to pay.

The Ministry of Public Security has requested the order of deportation from the Migration office, since Akl has an irregular migratory condition. “The subject was sentenced to 6 months of preventive imprisonment and after having been set free we can’t discard that he will continue committing acts of violence”, stated the Ministry of Public Security through social media and continued to explain “For this reason Minister Gustavo Mata, considers that deporting him immediately is a palliative measure to the raising violence in the country considering the structure of the operation these brothers had established. The Minister considers that subjecting him to a process in the country, being a highly dangerous man, would be giving him license or status to remain in the country and continue with his irregular activities”.

Minister Mata made clear that he “respected the court’s criteria, but didn’t agree with it”, which is why he is now requesting the change of the injunction measures imposed to be able to proceed with an immediate deportation.
