Several new self-named “low-cost” airlines began operations in Costa Rica this past year, and currently there is a total of eight offering their services in the country and covering different routes: Spirit, JetBlue, WestJet, Southwest, Volaris, Interjet, Wingo and Veca Airlines.

Having options is a good thing, certainly, and when it comes to traveling many try to save as much as possible in tickets to be able to use the extra cash otherwise. Low-cost airlines are here to satisfy the needs of those travelers that don’t mind sacrificing comfort or other commodities in exchange for a lower price.

However, if you have never used a discount airline before, it is a good idea to read through the small print and the restrictions each of them have to avoid unpleasant experiences later.
Let’s begin with the basics:

Luggage: The majority of people travel with luggage, and although regular airlines have been limiting the number and weight of suitcases you can bring, low-cost airlines take this limitation to another level. Most only allow you to carry a personal bag at no cost, this means, a purse or small backpack or briefcase. If you need to take carry-on or suitcases, you’ll need to pay an additional fee per item. Different airlines have different rules, but you want to make sure to read them before you purchase your ticket; since, if you are carrying more than one big bag you may end up paying back what you saved in your fare.

Seats: If where you are seating is important to you or you want to be certain that you and the person (s) you are traveling with are seating together you will need to pay extra. Budget airlines will assign you whatever seats they have left after other passengers have booked theirs. The cost of the selected seat can be of anywhere between $5-$25 depending on the location and the airline.

Food and Beverages: Don’t expect any courtesy drink or snack, they are not included with your fare. However, in most cases you can buy them once aboard.

Additional Costs: It is usually recommended and sometimes necessary to purchase any and all additional “perks” you want online, and if you can do it at the time you are buying your ticket even better; in most cases if you leave these selections for later they will have a higher cost than if you would have done it along with your ticket; the same goes if you decide to just do it at the airport counter, the cost goes up. Even when it comes to the check-in, some of these companies will charge you extra if you do the check-in at the airport as opposed to online. Check and beware of all these hidden costs, depending on your traveling needs, this service may not be right for you, as you could end up paying the same price as a regular airline or even more.

Some low-cost airlines offer better service than others, and you should always check online reviews so you can feel more comfortable about your choice or at least be aware of what you can expect.
