A young man who came to Costa Rica to help foreign language students at institutions of higher learning is currently recovering from multiple stab wounds sustained after a violent robbery.

According to a recent news report filed by Yaslin Cabezas of online news daily Costa Rica Hoy, the man is of French nationality and has been solely identified by the last name of Well.

The incident occurred during Sunday afternoon. Reports issued by agents from the Office of Judicial Investigations (Spanish initials: OIJ) indicate that the French expat, who lives in the suburban sector of San Pedro, left his apartment and went for a walk in the vicinity of the Monterrey High School. Specifically, the man was walking on a side street that connects with Calle Concordia to the west of the upscale Vargas Araya neighborhood, right on the edge of the Research City campus of the University of Costa Rica.

The victim was suddenly approached by several assailants who took all his personal belongings, including his wallet, smartphone and keys to his nearby apartment. The suspects, who have not been identified or apprehended, were not content with simply robbing the victim; they also stabbed him with a large blade and left him bleeding on the residential street. He was later transported to the Calderon Guardia Hospital, located in Barrio Amon and near the northeastern district of downtown San Jose.

OIJ agents explained that they are investigating the scene of the crime and the neighborhood to learn about recent criminal activity in the area. The suburban communities of San Pedro that surround the main campus of the University of Costa Rica are very attractive for expats looking for quiet, safe neighborhoods that are not far from the capital city. Unfortunately, crime in San Pedro and around the university campus has gradually increased in the last few years.
