A 22-year-old American woman tourist is in stable condition in Panama City’s Santo Tomás  hospital after a shooting incident in the downtown historic center, called Casco Viejo.

In the early morning hours of Friday, April 28, the woman was unintentionally shot by an Institutional Protection Service (SPI) agent, reported the local media El Siglo.

SPI director Eric Estrada was quoted as saying that the incident occurred while the agent was trying to arrest a taxi driver on Calle 9, said local press reports

According to El Siglo, when the taxi driver failed to stop when requested by the agent, the police then fired at the vehicle. The bullet hit the taxi’s young female passenger who had just left an establishment located between Calle 8 and 9.

Estrada said the case will be investigated both internally, through the Directorate of Professional Responsibility, and by the Public Security Ministry. The SPI provides security for the presidential palace and the surrounding area.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Panama is monitoring developments, said El Siglo.
