A physician evaluating the condition of Evgeny Otto, an imprisoned Russian man in Costa Rica who started a hunger strike in mid-October, explained that the inmate was at a point of no return with regard to his health. As reported by online news daily CRHoy.com a few days ago, Mr. Otto was resolute on consuming nothing but water as he pushed for a resolution to his Kafkaesque status in Costa Rica.

Thankfully, Mr. Otto has suspended his hunger strike following an administrative recourse hearing. He is eating bland meals and his health is being closely monitored.

Mr. Otto has been in custody for the last three years at the San Sebastian prison following an order by the Criminal Court in Pavas, which somehow ended up involved with an extradition request from his native Russia for his alleged participation in a complex and politically tinged fraud case. Mr. Otto requested political asylum in 2006 and has not been charged with any crimes in Costa Rica.
