The Human Rights Council, the highest body of the United on the important issue of human rights, today completed its twenty-seventh session with the adoption of 32 resolutions, 15 decisions and four presidential statements, notably including the proposal of Costa Rica on the World Program for Human Rights Education.

The UN forum session in which Costa Rica opted for re-election, was particularly successful for our country since the adoption was reached by consensus and with more than 80 co-sponsors of the resolution on the Global Education Program on Human Rights.

 

This resolution was presented to all the members of the Platform for Education and Training on Human Rights, specifically Slovenia, the Philippines, Italy, Morocco, Senegal, and Switzerland. The member nations adopted the Plan of Action for the Third Phase (2015-2019) of the World Program, which will focus on issues related to journalists and media professionals, with special emphasis on fighting discrimination.

 

The Council also adopted a resolution on Promoting the Right to Peace and a third session of the Working Group on the Right to Peace. This Working Group was chaired by the Costa Rican Ambassador to the UN Christian Guillermet Fernandez for its first two sessions, who has conducted his work under a philosophy termed “TICO”, which stands for Transparent, Inclusive, Consensual, and Objective.

 

The resolution includes the adoption of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Costa Rica, which was last performed in May. During the adoption of the report, the Permanent Representative of Costa Rica, Ambassador Gómez Elayne Whyte, said the ongoing commitment of our country to the promotion and protection of human rights is essential to our country’s love of peace, freedom and democracy. The UPR is a mechanism of the Human Rights Council universal cooperative, and it is used to assess compliance with international human rights obligations of all UN member states.
