With picket signs, banners, slogans, songs, and a general feeling of indignation, a march in memory of slain environmentalist Jairo Mora took place in San Jose on Thursday, January 29th. Demonstrators were united by a common sentiment and desire to see justice prevail in Jairo’s memory.
Jairo Mora was 26 years old when he was killed by a group of poachers in Moin, in the Caribbean province of Limon, in late May of 2013. Seven suspects were brought to the Criminal Tribunal in Limon, and yet none of them were charged with murder due to a series of blunders by prosecutors and law enforcement agents.
Demonstrators gathered in front of the Supreme Court complex and marched towards the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica, located in Cuesta de Moras. Among the demonstrators were two legislators, a former presidential candidate and even Edgar Gutierrez, Minister of the Environment. Legislator Franklin Corella of the Citizen Action party, under which President Luis Guillermo Solis campaigned last year, spoke to news radio station Monumental 93.5 FM and stated:
“Today we gather to repudiate the verdict in this case, or at least what is known about it thus far, and this is a sign of indignation with the actions of our prosecutors and our Attorney General, who seeks to stay out of the spotlight and is avoiding giving testimony before the Legislative Assembly. This is a critical situation.”
Demonstrators who have closely followed the criminal justice proceedings in this case were also interviewed by Monumental, and stated:
“When you hear that evidence was not introduced, and that it was mishandled, it really hurts inside. How can this happen? It is outrageous to think that those who are responsible for this heinous crimes will not pay for their actions.”

A deplorable investigation and mishandling of evidence have been cited as the key factors in the decision by a Criminal Tribunal in Limón, in the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, to relieve seven male suspects of homicide charges filed against them by inept prosecutors in the Jairo Mora Sandoval murder case.
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has issued a statement of indignation with the court proceedings in Limon; in fact, several black t-shirts with the Sea Shepherd logo were spotted at the march on Thursday.
